Social Media Community Management in Egypt: What a Cairo Agency Actually Does Every Day

Last updated 2026-10-01

Community management, defined — and how it differs from social media management

Social media community management is the day-to-day work of engaging, moderating and responding to an existing audience across a brand's owned social channels: comments, direct messages, story replies, reviews and mentions. It is distinct from social media management, which is about planning and publishing content to that audience.

The split, plainly:

Social media management Social media community management
Strategy and channel plan Comment replies and moderation
Content calendar and copywriting Direct messages and story replies
Publishing and scheduling Google Business Profile review responses
Paid amplification and boosting Mentions, tags and brand-name monitoring
Creative production Escalation, crisis handling and blocklists

This page is about the second column. Most Egyptian brands buy both together, and WWV Marketing delivers both, along with the rest of its seven in-house services — social media management, media buying, content creation, videography and photography, event management, public relations, and e-commerce support. WWV keeps strategy, content, design, photography, film, editing, media buying and events under one roof, so the idea in the strategy is the idea that gets shot and published. But community management is bought and judged on different things: coverage hours, response speed and who is awake at 11pm on a Thursday. That is what the rest of this page documents.

What actually lands in an Egyptian brand's inbox every day

Open the Meta Business Suite inbox of a mid-sized Egyptian retailer, clinic or FMCG brand on a Friday evening and the composition is remarkably consistent:

That last pattern is the commercial heart of it. In Egypt the sale is rarely closed on the post. It is closed in the DM, or after handover to WhatsApp Business. So comment-to-DM conversion and DM response speed are revenue variables, not engagement vanity metrics. A price question that sits unanswered for six hours is a lost order, not a lower engagement rate.

Volume is the part generic guides miss. Because media buying budgets in Egypt buy a lot of reach per pound, a single boosted post on a mid-sized retail page can carry hundreds of comments while the in-house team is two people. The inbox scales with ad spend, not with headcount. Paid campaigns across Meta, Google, TikTok and Snapchat all feed the same inbox, and every pound of that spend is reconciled against reach and cost per result each month — which is exactly why comment and DM volume tracks spend rather than follower count.

Our scope of work, line by line

Channels covered

Exact channel mix and any add-on channels are agreed per account during scoping, since coverage is built around where each brand's audience and ad spend actually sit.

Daily moderation and response

Escalation and crisis handling

A named three-step ladder, with the trigger written down before it is needed:

  1. Agent resolves. Standard sales, service and information queries answered from the approved reply bank.
  2. Account lead resolves. Triggered by: a refund or compensation request, a repeated complaint from the same customer, an inaccurate claim spreading in a thread, or any reply that falls outside the approved bank.
  3. Client-side contact notified. Triggered by: a legal threat, a health or safety claim, a product-defect allegation, a complaint referencing the Egyptian Consumer Protection Agency, a journalist or press mention, or a negative thread gaining velocity across accounts.

Escalation to step three happens promptly by phone and WhatsApp to the named client contact, not by email — the same contact channels we run ourselves: info@wwv-eg.com and +20 120 345 3435.

Community building beyond replies

What is not included

Honest exclusions, so nothing is assumed:

Response times: our published SLA

Not "we respond quickly" — but we're not going to publish specific response-time targets, complaint SLAs or crisis timings here until they're confirmed and agreed per account, because coverage hours and staffing models differ by tier and by client.

Two things about coverage that matter more in Egypt than anywhere else.

The working week and the engagement week are not the same week. Egyptian offices run Sunday to Thursday — WWV's own working hours are Sunday to Friday, 08:00 to 18:00 Cairo time. Egyptian social engagement peaks on Friday and Saturday, when your in-house team is off and your ad spend is still running. Buying an agency retainer and then going dark for the two highest-traffic days defeats the point. Weekend cover is a stated part of our scope, not a favour.

Ramadan changes the clock, not just the calendar. Working hours shift, the post-iftar window becomes the day's commercial peak, and DM traffic continues through suhoor hours. Eid al-Fitr campaign spend compounds it. Ramadan staffing and shift patterns are agreed with each client ahead of the season rather than published as a fixed model here.

How the SLA is measured. First-response time is pulled per channel from Meta Business Suite and our management stack — built on Wieldy, the agency platform WWV uses to run the studio and the same platform behind every client's portal — reported monthly by tier, and reviewed on the monthly call. A published SLA with no measurement method is marketing copy. Where we miss the target, the report shows the miss, the cause and the fix.

Arabic moderation is not a translation job

An Egyptian comment thread runs in four languages at once. Egyptian colloquial Arabic in Arabic script. Franco-Arab, also called Arabizi — "3ayez", "2addesh", "msh 3arf". Modern Standard Arabic in formal complaints. And English, often mid-sentence. One customer will switch between all four in a single thread.

This breaks three things at once:

Automated moderation. Tools trained on MSA miss dialect entirely, and miss Franco-Arab completely because it is Latin script. A blocklist that contains only Arabic-script variants of a word catches perhaps a third of its real uses.

Tone. Replying in Modern Standard Arabic to a colloquial complaint reads as cold, corporate and dismissive to an Egyptian customer. It escalates threads that a colloquial reply would have closed. Register matching is not a stylistic preference; it changes the outcome of the exchange.

Measurement. Sentiment analysis under-reads Arabic sarcasm and the ironic use of praise, so automated sentiment scores on Egyptian pages run optimistic. Right-to-left text also renders badly in some export formats, which quietly corrupts reporting.

So the practical mechanics: blocklists carry dialect and Franco-Arab spelling variants of every term; sentiment is human-reviewed before it goes in a report; and replies go back in the language and register the customer used. All community management work, like everything else at WWV, is delivered in Arabic and English — Arabic copy is written for the Egyptian market from scratch, never translated from English, and the same discipline applies to reply drafting. The team runs from WWV's head office at Arabella Plaza, New Cairo.

The same discipline covers Google Business Profile. A review written in Egyptian Arabic gets an Egyptian Arabic response — a translated MSA reply is visible to every future customer reading that listing.

Your community guidelines — and a template you can use today

A published community guidelines document is the defensible basis for hiding or deleting a comment. Without it, every deletion is arbitrary, and in Egypt a screenshot of a deleted comment captioned "الشركة بتحذف الكومنتات" travels further than the original complaint. With it, you have a rule you published in advance and applied consistently.

A workable set covers:

One rule, written badly and written enforceably

Badly: "We remove inappropriate comments."

Unenforceable. "Inappropriate" is whatever the moderator felt at 2am, and it is indefensible when screenshotted.

Enforceably: "Comments containing profanity, personal insults directed at other community members or our staff, phone numbers, or promotion of other businesses will be hidden. Comments breaching Meta Community Standards will be deleted and the account reported. Repeat breaches within 30 days result in a block."

Ask us for a bilingual (Arabic and English) community guidelines starting point built around this structure — get in touch and we'll share it as part of scoping.

What you get in the monthly report

The numbers:

Then the section most agencies never include: what the community told us. A written summary of what the inbox revealed about your product, pricing, delivery promise and stock. The inbox is the cheapest continuous customer research your business owns — a recurring complaint is a product or operations brief, not a moderation task. That is the argument for community management as a commercial function rather than a cost line.

Every client reviews this in their own portal — built on Wieldy — where content, calendar and reports are all visible and approvable in one place, alongside a monthly call with the account lead.

What community management costs in Egypt

Pricing for community management is scoped per brand rather than sold off a fixed rate card, because the two things that actually move the price aren't uniform across clients:

  1. Conversation volume. Driven by your ad spend, not your audience size. A smaller-follower page running heavy boosting costs more to cover than a larger page that posts organically.
  2. Required coverage hours. Sunday–Thursday core is one price. Adding Friday–Saturday, late-evening and Ramadan suhoor cover is a staffing decision and priced as one.

The in-house comparison. Build the internal case honestly. A full-time Egyptian community manager has to cover their standard working week, and weekend or evening cover needs a second person or paid overtime. Add annual leave and sick cover, a management layer to handle escalations, and tooling costs billed in USD, which land hard against an EGP budget — which is why many Egyptian teams run on Meta Business Suite alone and lose TikTok, X and review coverage as a result. Compare that total against a retainer before deciding. WWV runs most accounts on a monthly retainer, managing the account day to day rather than delivering a single campaign and leaving — get in touch for scoped pricing against your channels and volume.

How we start: the first 30 days

Week 1 — Audit and access. Channel-by-channel audit of the last 30 days. Page admin and role setup. Inbox backlog cleared. Blocklists built with dialect and Franco-Arab variants.

Week 2 — Rules and voice. Community guidelines drafted and approved by you. Tone-of-voice guide and reply bank built in Egyptian Arabic and English. Escalation contacts named and confirmed.

Weeks 3–4 — Live cover. Agents live with the account lead shadowing every shift. First SLA measurement taken. First insight report delivered.

What we need from you to start: page and Business Manager admin access, one named escalation contact reachable out-of-hours, your product and pricing FAQ source of truth, and one person with sign-off authority for replies outside the approved bank.

Frequently asked questions

What is social media community management? It is the daily work of engaging, moderating and responding to an existing audience on a brand's owned social channels — comments, DMs, story replies, reviews and mentions — including escalation of complaints and enforcement of community guidelines. It is delivery, not publishing.

What is the difference between community management and social media management? Social media management is outbound: strategy, content calendar, publishing and paid amplification. Community management is inbound: replying to comments and DMs, moderating threads, responding to reviews, and escalating complaints. Most Egyptian brands buy both, but they are separately scoped and separately measured. For more on where social media management fits for Egyptian businesses, see The Role of Social Media for Egyptian Businesses — And When It's Worth Paying an Agency.

Is community management just customer service on social media? No. It includes customer service, but also moderation against published guidelines, reputation protection, UGC sourcing, community building and insight reporting. A customer service team closes tickets. A community manager also shapes what a public thread looks like to the thousand people reading it.

Do you moderate comments and DMs in Egyptian Arabic? Yes. Our community managers are Egyptian-Arabic native speakers in Cairo and reply in the language and register the customer used — Egyptian colloquial, Franco-Arab (Arabizi), Modern Standard Arabic or English. Blocklists include dialect and Latin-script spelling variants that automated tools miss.

How fast will you reply to comments and messages? Response targets are agreed per account by query type — sales enquiries fastest, then complaints, then general comments, with a separate crisis tier — and measured per channel and reported monthly by tier once scoped for your account.

Do you cover Fridays, Saturdays, Ramadan and public holidays in Egypt? Friday and Saturday cover is in scope, because Egyptian engagement peaks on those days while in-house teams are off. Ramadan runs on a shifted schedule covering the post-iftar and suhoor windows, with staffing agreed per client ahead of the season.

What should a brand's social media community guidelines include? What gets hidden, what gets deleted, what always gets a reply, what triggers a block, how personal data posted publicly is handled, and your stated position on religious, political and competitor content. Publish it before you need it — it is your defence when a deletion is screenshotted.

When should a comment be hidden, deleted or replied to? Hide profanity, competitor promotion and off-topic spam. Delete content breaching Meta Community Standards or TikTok Community Guidelines, plus doxxing and hate speech. Always reply to questions about price, availability, delivery or service failures — never hide a genuine complaint.

How much does social media community management cost in Egypt per month? Pricing is set by conversation volume and required coverage hours, not follower count, and is scoped per brand. Weekend, late-evening and Ramadan cover are staffing decisions and are priced separately.

Is it cheaper to hire an in-house community manager or use an agency? Compare total cost, not salary. In-house means one person covering the standard working week, plus weekend and evening cover, leave and sick cover, an escalation manager, and USD-billed tooling. A retainer bundles coverage, cover-for-cover and tooling into one EGP line.

Who owns our social accounts and message data? You do. We work as assigned users on your Meta Business Manager and platform accounts, never as owners. Access is granted by you and revoked by you. All conversation data, exports and reports belong to you and are handed over in full at the end of a contract, and remain visible throughout via your client portal.

Do you use chatbots or AI to reply, and when does a human take over? Automation is limited to first-touch acknowledgements and FAQ routing where you approve it. Every complaint, price negotiation, escalation and Arabic-dialect exchange is handled by a human. Automation that guesses at Egyptian colloquial or Franco-Arab creates more problems than it solves.

How do you handle a complaint that goes viral? It moves straight to the crisis tier: the account lead takes over the thread, your named contact is notified by phone and WhatsApp, a holding response is posted publicly, and the conversation moves to DM. We do not delete the original thread unless it breaches published guidelines.

How do you report on community management results? A monthly report covering first-response time by tier, conversations handled, comment-to-DM conversion, DM-to-WhatsApp handover, sentiment split, top five recurring complaints, moderation actions and community growth — plus a written "what the community told us" insight summary, all visible in your client portal and reviewed on a call with your account lead.
